Clean Up -- April 29
Sullivan, Sorrento, Gouldsboro, and Winter Harbor are participating in a
roadside cleanup on April 29.
Gouldsboro and Winter Harbor will arrange to have the roadside trash picked up along with the regular
trash. Ed has delivered bags to Winter Harbor and Gouldsboro.
Friends of Schoodic will focus on cleaning up the Park. We will meet at 9 AM at
the Frazer picnic area. Friends of Schoodic will supply coffee. Marla will supply T-shirts and
snacks. Pauline will help with posters and poster distribution. Tom and Jeanie
will distribute posters in Winter Harbor. Jay will distribute in West
Gouldsboro. Bill Z. will contact Roger Barto and Brad Vassey to see if they have
any questions.
Sumner High School students will be cleaning up a number of areas along Route
1, including the area across from Young's market.
Park Report
Last Saturday, with help from FOS, the Park and Acadia Partners set up the
medical building for a lab area. Jim said that there would be 4 groups using
that area this summer.
On May 6 there will be a crew that moves furniture into the Schoodic Shores
housing for use as a dormitory for the SEA students. This work will start at 9
AM, meeting at Schoodic Shores housing. Ed estimates that this will be done by
early afternoon.
Gatehouse
Gatehouse training -- training is May 20 and June 17.
FOA
First Saturday in June (June 3) is National Trails Day. FOS will
discuss what we might do on this date to work on Schoodic District trails at our next meeting. The Friends of
Acadia annual meeting will be July 14 -- all members are welcome.
Acadia Partners
Denny passed out two articles from the Acadia Partners
website. One
summarized the Research Opportunities
Catalog, which is an outline of the scientific work
that needs to be done in the Park. The other article summarizes the grants that
Acadia Partners and Friends of Acadia are making to support research in the
Park. With assistance from LL Bean, Friends of Acadia and Acadia Partners
are supporting seven research projects in the Park during this coming year.
Garry raised the notion of establishing a volunteer coordinator to handle the
volunteer activity related to Acadia Partners.
SERC
Jim passed out requests for volunteer help from David Olson, who is seeking
volunteers to help with collecting data on shore use. He also passed around a
request from the Maine Forest service for
a volunteer to monitor a light trap over the course of
the summer. Finally, he circulated a list of the Resource Acadia programs that
will be offered over the summer. For more information, see the description on
the Acadia Partners website.
Schoodic Junior Ranger day is scheduled for April 27, over here at Schoodic.
Officers
The group agreed that it is getting to be time to nominate and elect
committee officers for the coming year. Garry will circulate an email asking people to nominate themselves or others
for officer positions -- people should email or call Ruth Sargent.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30.
