FOS meeting
June 8, 2005
Friends of Schoodic Meeting
The meeting took place at the Park Ranger station and SERC headquarters,
since the Schooner Club is scheduled for use by other groups as part of the
increased SERC activity.
In attendance: Lisa Horsch and Marla O'Byrne, Dirk Faegre, Tom Mayer, Jeanie
Wilson, Fran Rhodes, Pauline Angione, Nancy Horschak, Jay Horschak, Bill
Zoellick, Rosemary Levin, Garry Levin, Ann Barton, Richard Barton, Jim Wagner,
Ed Pontbriand, Denny O'Brien.
Gatehouse
The second training for new volunteers is set for June 11. New people
will start in the
morning at 8:30 -- veterans from 1:00 to 4:00.
The gatehouse opens June17.
Student Conservation Association
The SCA will be here in the campground for a month. The group consists of high school
students, funded by LL Bean. They will work on moving the fence bundles on the
18th and 19th, along with quite a bit of other work. FOS volunteers will
work with them on the 18th to help direct the fence work. The day starts at the
gatehouse at 8:30.
Other Clean Up
June 12 -- clean up of islands. Brush work on the Wed., June 15.
Fire crew comes on Tuesday and works along the roadside.
SEA
There is a delay in the disposition of the Junior Ranger Grant -- we might get
unofficial word on Friday. Fran is pulling together a task force for a fund
raiser -- seven people have volunteered to help at this point. Fran suggests
broadening the focus to youth activities in general, so that it could cover
SEA too. Bill Z and Garry spoke in favor of the broadened focus. Ed reminded us
that we need a special use permit for an organized walk in the park.
SEA is still in need of equipment. Fran will get in touch with Jim McKenna to
get the list in electronic form and get it to Bill Z, who will circulate it.
Architectural Drawing Project
Currently, Pauline and Ruth are sorting the drawings into their final
folders. Volunteers are needed to help with data input, staring in July. Four to
six volunteers would be ideal.
Artists in Residence Project
Garry reported that FOS has drafted a letter that will be provided to artists
as they arrive, offering assistance and an introduction to the community. The
letter is in Jim McKenna's hands -- he will coordinate with Kate and get it into
the artists packet. The artists arrive in the fall. Current plans
are for 7 to 8 artists.
Newsletter
It is still in process. Dirk presented a mock up of the newsletter. One question is
whether SERC content should be included. Denny offered to send out a separate
mailing to FOS members. There was discussion about the content -- focused on the
need to get more in the newsletter promoting FOS and FOA. Everyone agreed that
the key thing was to get it out.
Picnic
It is set for the 30th at 4 PM. Marla will coordinate. Bill Z. and Ed P. will help
with logistics. Dirk will coordinate sending out postcard invitations. It was
decided that we would put up posters to invite the community at large. We will
also invite the volunteers from Friends of Acadia. Pauline will hang posters.
Postcards will go out July 15.
Commissary and Dormitory Work
Construction is expected to begin this fall -- with completion of the dorm by next summer,
and the commissary by fall. There will also be landscaping work done to make the
SERC campus look more campus like and less like a military base.
SERC
Denny reported that there are 40 some events this summer, with about 1200
people participating. The first face-to-face board meeting for Acadia
Partners for this year is set for July5.
T-shirt
There was discussion of a Friends of Acadia/Friends of Schoodic
T-shirt. Marla will look into possibilities.
The meeting adjourned at 9 PM.
