Friends of Schoodic Meeting –
17 September 2003

Attending the meeting:  Bill Zoellick, Jay Horschak, Pauline Angione, Jim Wagner, Nancy Horschak, Jeanie Wilson, Sally McKinnon, Peter Drinkwater, Tom Mayer, Ed Pontbriand, Bill Stone, Ruth Sargent, Stanley Torrey

Trail Cleanup

Scheduled for the 27th.  Focus is on Alder trail and Anvil trail, as well as general cleanup around the shore.  FOS will put posters around town.  Hoped for turnout is 50 people.

Jay H. will call Sumner High to see if they will help out.

Transportation Meeting

Tom Mayer, Peter Drinkwater, Frank Cassidy, Bill Stone, and Bill Zoellick attended the meeting at the NPS regarding the Island Explorer bus service and plans for transportation expansion.  These attendees reported on the meeting.  Bill Zoellick produced a written report, which is attached to these notes.

Discussion followed.  There were a number of suggestions from the group regarding the Schoodic Explorer service.

q       interview bus drivers

q       provide suggestions for improvement

q       get a more attractive bus

q       change the lunch break to coincide with ferries

q       drop the Prospect Harbor end of the loop

There was discussion of whether FOS should support the bus.  Concerns included questions about the purpose of the bus, whether it was a good use of limited resources, whether it was more than support for a few local businesses, and whether the program had been in place for long enough to let FOS or others form a fair opinion about the service’s utility.

The decision was that FOS should remain  neutral with regard to the Schoodic Explorer, neither supporting nor opposing it.  FOS would work to monitor what is happening.  The group decided that the bus is not a priority issue for FOS.

Next Steps for FOS

What should FOS become?  What work needs to be done over the Winter?  A number of participants made observations about the structure and role of FOS:

Bill Stone:  the original assumption was that FOS would become a separate entity.  He raises the question of whether there is really a need to do that.

Jim Wagner: at the current level of activity, the joint arrangement seems to be working.

Jay Horschak:  suggests making a list of pros and cons, regarding becoming a separate organization.

No decisions were made at this meeting about the direction or structure of FOS.  Consequently, no new planning is underway regarding Bylaws or other matters.
