About Friends of Schoodic

The Schoodic division of Acadia National Park

Friends of Schoodic is a committee of Friends of Acadia that is focused on preserving and protecting the Schoodic District of Acadia National Park.

Acadia National Park on the Schoodic Peninsula, long known for its quiet beauty and isolation, is experiencing new challenges. Downeast Maine is facing increased development and tourism.  As the crowding increases on Mount Desert Island, more visitors will be attracted to Schoodic.  In addition, the former navy property, 100 acres at the core of the park at Schoodic Point (acquired by the National Park Service in 2002) is now the home of the Schoodic Education and Research Center (SERC), which brings new opportunities as well as new challenges.

Friends of Schoodic is engaged in many of the kinds of activities that characterize all of Friends of Acadia's work, but with a focus on Schoodic.  These activities include:

  • Helping with trail maintenance, shore cleanup, and other projects
  • Providing financial support for specific projects not funded by the park budget
  • Representing the local community’s concerns with regard to the Park and its operations, including SERC.
  • Establishing a core of local volunteers to be called upon by the park when needed

Friends of Schoodic welcomes help and support of all kinds from anyone who cares about Acadia National Park on Schoodic.  Contact us for information about how to help.
